How to Budget for a Wedding: What is Needed?

Everyone wants the perfect wedding. One major concern in planning one however is what it will cost. Since most of us are not celebrities, the cost must be taken into consideration when planning. Another big question is who is paying for the wedding?

The Components of a Wedding Budget

The main items in a wedding that must be considered when making a budget are:

  • Wedding dress: Depending on how elaborate you want to go, the wedding dress itself can cost a couple thousand dollars. Add to that the necessary accessories and you could spend well over $3000 easily.

  • Tuxedo for the Groom: Many grooms will rent their tuxedos and this can start from approximately $150.

  • Clothes for bridal party: For many weddings, the bride and groom will foot the cost

  • Wedding rings: The cost of these varies greatly depending on the material used, the design and size of the diamonds. Some persons stick to plain gold bands to reduce cost.

  • Invitation: The invitations are sent to inform and invite guests to the wedding. The cost can be kept down if you do them yourself.

  • Venue: This can mean payment not just for the reception hall but also for the place where the ceremony itself takes place.

  • Transportation: The bride and groom generally take their first spin as a couple in a rented limousine. The cost of this depends on the type of limo rented and for how long.

  • Food: This can be a big budget item, but cost will vary depending on what time of day the wedding is held as well as the number of guests invited.

  • Honeymoon: This is one of the most expensive parts of any wedding. The cost will depend on whether you plan on vacationing in your own country or traveling elsewhere. The Hawaiian Islands are a popular destination for newlyweds. Depending on where and how long you stay a honeymoon can be a few thousand dollars.

Cost Considerations

To contain costs, there are many things that the couple can do. One way of planning wedding with a low or average budget is to look at the size of the wedding party. The smaller the number of invited guest the less the reception will cost.

Once you have come up with a budget, you may find that you need to trim it down even more. Do this by selecting the two or three things that you really want and then start paring from what remains. You may find that you can have the reception at home or at a friend’s house thus eliminating the need to pay for a venue. Other ways to cut costs and save is to have the wedding and reception at the same place. This will minimize the cost of transportation.

When planning a wedding it is a good idea to try and stick to the wedding budget once you have completed it. While this is not always possible, a budget will serve as a guide and help prevent overspending. There are many sites online with calculators or wedding budget planning sheets. These can be used to help determine the cost of a wedding based on which state you live in. In this way you can have a rough idea of what your wedding will cost at the outset.
